SUPPORT & WELLNESS PROGRAMS

Cancer treatment at AVRTC goes well beyond radiation therapy. Below, you can find a number of free resources designed for past, current, and future patients.

Dietician Services

Cancer treatment takes a toll on the body, which is why all our patients, both past and present, have access to an in-house dietician who can help create a dietary strategy centered around your unique treatment and recovery.

For more information on our free dietician services stop by our front desk or nursing station.

Meet Your Dietician - Sabrina Hoppas, RD, CSR, LD, CNSC

Sabrina was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She also holds advanced practice certifications in nutrition support and renal nutrition.

Sabrina has worked as a clinical dietitian at the Alaska Native Medical Center since 2018 and previously worked as an outpatient dietitian at the Alaska VA. She began practicing at Anchorage & Valley Radiation Therapy Center in 2023. Sabrina is passionate about helping people treat and recover from illness through nutrition. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, skiing, hiking, and backpacking with her dog in tow.

Yoga Classes

Before, during, and after your cancer treatment, it is important to give your mental and physical health the attention it deserves. AVRTC offers free in-person and virtual yoga classes each week that you can participate in regardless of experience level.

In-person Yoga

Join us at Alaska Regional on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 PM AKST for a relaxing group yoga session. We are currently requiring masks and limiting class size to six participants for safety, so make sure to register in advance here: Reserve your spot.

Virtual Yoga
If you can’t make it to our in-person classes, you can still attend our online Healing Chair Yoga class from the comfort of your home. Our virtual class takes place between 1:30 to 2:30 PM AKST every Friday on Zoom. To attend, visit this Zoom link shortly before 1:30 and enter the passcode “yoga” if prompted.

Meet Your Teacher

Margo Sorum has been teaching yoga since 1999, but it was her experience with Suzi Drinen that motivated her to work with cancer patients. Margo was by Suzi’s side throughout her cancer journey, all the way to the end, and Suzi’s authenticity and love of life inspired Margo to help other cancer patients find peace and freedom through the beauty of yoga.

Margo is a certified yoga and massage therapist, Adjunct Instructor of Yoga at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Director of Yoga for Anchorage Radiation Therapy Center, and owner of Bliss Bodywork with Margo, LLC.  She has a passion for Natural Posture and helping people move with grace and ease. She also strives to integrate the wisdom of yoga into every facet of her students’ lives, from movement to breath, relationships to action, and thoughts to words.

Contact Margo

If you have questions about or yoga classes, or yoga in general, feel free to call Margo Sorum at 907-947-2030 or email her at blissyogawithmargo@gmail.com. We have an online library of free yoga classes for your enjoyment; all you have to do is reach out to Margo to gain access.

Transportation Services

AVRTC partners with the American Cancer Society to provide transportation aid to cancer patients in Alaska.

Road to Recovery®

*Currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic

This program provides transportation to and from treatment for cancer patients who do not have access to a vehicle or who are unable to drive themselves. It is available in the Anchorage, Mat-Su, Fairbanks, and Kenai areas.

Given that drivers are volunteers, not medical professionals, you must be able to sit, stand, and walk without assistance; otherwise, an adult caregiver must accompany you.

To schedule a ride, call 1 (800) 227-2345

Please note: If you would like to take part in this program, please submit a request at least four business days prior to the date you will need transportation.

Ravn Flights

Through the Ravn Alaska flight service, you can receive up to three, free round-trip flights per year to and from cancer related appointments in Alaska. If you require a caregiver to accompany you during travel, they will receive 50% off their flight costs.

To schedule your flight, call 1 (800) 227-2345

Please note: you must call at least four business days prior to your desired flight date.
