There are no surgical incisions using Gamma Knife ®Icon™, so it’s generally less risky than an open craniotomy, where the possibility exists for problems with anesthesia, bleeding, infection, and potential damage to adjacent brain.
Early side effects following Gamma Knife Icon® radiosurgery are usually temporary. They may include:
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Transient increase in symptoms resulting from swelling as the tumor responds to the treatment.
- Pin site complications in patients who may require the added precision of a stereotactic head frame.
Other side effects may occur, depending on the target site and the dose of radiation received. This should be discussed thoroughly with the treating physician.
